Learning Opportunities
These opportunities may be arranged with your school guidance counselor or pursued on your own. School credit for these options and requirements for community service vary between school systems. These options provide paid and unpaid work experience to help you determine if your career goal is a good fit for you, provide you with workplace competencies that will help you in any job, and give you valuable experience that will make you an attractive candidate when you apply for a job. You will need to be proactive to take advantage of these opportunities.
Job Shadowing: observe a person during a typical work day in a chosen field.
Mentorship: develop an informal relationship with an adult who provides guidance in education, career exploration, and planning
Senior Internship: participate in unpaid learning experiences in a professional field (school credit)
Summer Internship/Career Institute: participate in paid learning experiences in the information technology and health sciences fields. (arranged in partnership with CATEC)
Cooperative Education (Co-Op): participate in school supervised, paid work experience (school credit)
Student Apprenticeship: develop a formal training agreement for students planning to enroll in adult apprenticeship
Leadership: plan and implement student government proposals and activities through the year (school credit)
Teaching Fellows Seminar: participate in classroom and internship experiences (for students interested in careers in education) (school credit)
Independent Study: investigate a topic of personal interest outside the scope of current course offerings (school credit)
Community Service: contribute time and skills to improve the life of an individual or an organization in need.
Service Learning: participate in community service and reflect on service and learning experiences through a mix of writing, reading, listening, and speaking in small groups or individually.
Career Academies: promote career awareness, skill development, and workplace experiences in information technology or health sciences (offered through CATEC)
