First, you must obtain a Virginia learner's permit. You must be at least fifteen years and six months. You must show two proofs of identity (usually your birth certificate and social security card) and prove that you live in Virginia (bring your parent with you!). You must pass a vision screening and the two-part knowledge exam. The DMV web site allows you to take a practice test as many times as you need to so that you can feel confident and comfortable taking the test. You must be at least sixteen years and three months to get a driver's license. You must hold a learner's permit at least nine months, practice driving at least 40 hours (10 at night), and complete a state-approved driver education program to get your driver's license.

Evaluation:Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center's Occupational Therapy department offers a state-certified driving program with nationally certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialists. One of these Driving Rehabilitation Specialists will evaluate your ability and potential to drive. The WWRC Driving Program can provide you with recommendations for special vehicle needs including information on the types of vehicles that will best match your special driving needs and the rest of your mobility equipment.
